The French department of Vosges, located in the Grand Est region, covers 5874 km2 and has a population of 39,2846, according to the latest census. The Vosges Forest Massif, which occupies a large part of the territory, lends the department its name. It is bordered to the north by Meuse and Meurthe-et-Moselle, to the east by the Rhine, to the west by Haute-Marne and to the south by Territoire de Belfort and Haute-Saône. The Vosges climate is oceanic and temperate in summer. The ideal time to go on vacation in the Vosges is from May to September, when temperatures are at their most pleasant and the magnificent mountain scenery is bathed in sunlight. Renowned for its hiking trails, the Vosges attracts many hikers every year. From our campsite in the Vosges, Au Clos de la Chaume, you’ll find a wide range of walks in the Corcieux area, to suit all levels of ability. You can go for a family walk around Vosges lakes, through woods and valleys or observe waterfalls. You may even be lucky enough to encounter local animals such as beavers and chamois along the way! For the more adventurous who want to go for a day or more, take the GR5 long-distance hiking trail , which crosses the entire Massif des Vosges.

The Vosges is also an ideal place to get out and about by bike. Secure cycle paths known as “voies vertes” allow all cycling enthusiasts to explore the Hautes Vosges. You can observe the architectural heritage of the surrounding villages, or pedal through the heart of nature.

Discovering a rich cultural heritage

The region is also rich in history and culture, with many castles and museums to discover. Traditional villages and local markets also offer an opportunity to discover local culture and handicrafts.

Indeed, summer is the ideal season to sample local produce, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, cheeses and wines. The Vosges is also famous for its culinary specialties, such as kneffes, a dish similar to Alsatian spätzle, blueberry tarts and fresh mirabelles. It’s also an opportunity to explore the Alsatian wine route. You’ll be able to taste seven different grape varieties, as well as dry and sweet wines from 1,000 wineries.

High in the Vosges valleys, imposing medieval castles built of pink sandstone, a typical Vosges rock, can sometimes be seen. Among the most visited are Chateau du Haut Koenigsbourg, Fleckenstein and Chateau de Saint Ulrich.
